Inbox: Impact of potential Machado trade?

January 22, 2018

Explain to me please the logic of acquiring Manny Machado, who will be a free agent after the season and is going to cost $16 million this year. Are the D-backs thinking they can sign him long term, and if so, why not just re-sign J.D. Martinez?— Carl, Phoenix Machado is an outstanding player, and with the D-backs in position to contend again this year, if they could add him…

Sizzling Dylan Strome Dominating AHL

It was less than three years ago when Dylan Strome was selected by the Arizona Coyotes with the third-overall choice in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. However, in that short period of time, Strome’s perception as a player has seemingly transitioned from that of a top prospect to, rather, a long-term project. And, following a handful of unsuccessful stints at the NHL-level with the Coyotes, many would be quick to…

Monday Morning Howl: Coyotes Starting to Heat Up

Don’t look now, but with points in six of their last seven games, the Arizona Coyotes are one of the hottest teams in the Western Conference. Four Points for Coyotes The Coyotes entered last week fresh off of a disappointing 6-5 overtime loss to the San Jose Sharks on Jan. 13, and began their slate of three games against those same Sharks, this time at Gila River Arena in Glendale….

Smith ranked 3rd among first-base prospects

January 19, 2018

PHOENIX — When the D-backs selected Pavin Smith with the No. 7 overall pick in last year’s Draft, the club believed his ability to hit at the University of Virginia would translate to pro ball. That proved to be the case as Smith slashed .318/.401/.415 in 222 plate appearances in 2017 for Class A Short Season Hillsboro of the Northwest League. Mike Munchak turns down second Cardinals interview

January 17, 2018

You can cross one name off Arizona’s lengthy coaching search: Mike Munchak. NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday that Pittsburgh’s offensive line coach has turned down the chance for a second interview with the Cardinals. It’s unclear why Munchak declined the opportunity, but it’s possible he sees himself as a candidate for the Steelers‘ offensive coordinator job if Todd Haley winds up departing. The Cardinals, meanwhile, will wage on…

Breaking down Cardinals, Colts, Giants, Lions coaching searches

January 13, 2018

It’s been nearly two weeks since the regular season ended, and the coaching carousel remains at a standstill. Two jobs have been filled — the Raiders by Jon Gruden and the Bears by Matt Nagy. And neither move led to a domino effect of creating other jobs to be filled. Thus, four head coaching jobs remain open and could be for a while depending on this weekend’s results. Here is…

Kit of the Day – The Phoen…er, the Arizona Coyotes

The Arizona Coyotes, at the time long overdue for a uniform change, rolled out their current uniforms in time for the 2015-16 National Hockey League season. However, the new rendition leaves much to be desired. An Unbalanced Mess At first glance, the addition of black seems to be a welcome one, given the relative blandness of the previous edition (I’ll get to that one later). Illustration by Andrew M….

Monday Morning Howl: Coyotes Earn 3 Points to Start ’18

There’s no doubt that 2017 was a disappointing year for the Arizona Coyotes, but the early returns from 2018 suggest that it’ll be a much better year for the club. Coyotes Start Strong in 2018 The Coyotes dropped their final game of 2017 in Anaheim on New Year’s Eve, but their 2018 got off to a much better start when they hosted the Nashville Predators at Gila River Arena on…
