View from Above: Face it, NFL. You had your chance

November 21, 2017

Memo to the Dolphins, Bills, Steelers and Jets:   Good luck.  You’ll probably need it. It was a struggle during the early portion of the 2017 schedule.  So much so, that there were TWO losses at Gillette Stadium, where New England has had better than an 80% success rate since opening the facility in 2002.   The defense had communication issues, so we’ve been told.  And the offense was missing an important…

Performance Review: Patriots at Raiders

November 20, 2017

1st Quarter …I like what OC Josh McDaniels did on New England’s opening possession, electing to use the hurry-up offense frequently not only to unsettle the Raider defense, but also to tire them out in the nearly 7,400-ft. altitude of Mexico City. New England had the advantage from the get-go of having spent the previous nine days at similar heights while they stayed and practiced in Colorado last week. For…

Matchup Winners: Big plays key rout

November 20, 2017

Read When the Patriots ran: Edge: Patriots Truth be told the Patriots didn’t run the ball very well in Mexico. New England’s backfield trio of Dion Lewis (10 carries, 60 yards), Rex Burkhead (5 for 16) and James White (5 for 13) combined for only 89 yards on 20 attempts including a 20-yard run by Lewis late in the first half. Working without two starters, the offensive line had trouble…

Stock Watch: Brady and Cooks air it out

November 20, 2017

Tom Brady and Brandin Cooks have been relatively productive working together all season. Sunday afternoon at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City the Patriots (8-2) big-play passing duo took advantage of the thin air and the putrid Raiders pass defense to lead New England to the 33-8 blowout victory. The Patriots closed out what was a two-game road trip outscoring AFC West foes Denver and Oakland a combined 74-24 to extend…

Game Observations: Patriots enjoy fiesta in Mexico

November 20, 2017

Another week and another overmatched opponent out of the AFC West. As was the case in Denver, the Patriots were never in trouble as they waltzed their way through a 33-8 win over the Oakland Raiders in Mexico City. New England has now won six in a row and kept pace with the Pittsburgh Steelers, who won Thursday night, at 8-2 atop the AFC standings. Here are some random thoughts…
